Pre-University Education Centre
The pre-university education centre (PUEC) was set up in September 1996. Victor A. Estraikh is Director of the Centre (room 206, VI building, tel.: (+7 383 346-35-75). The Centre comprises a technical lyceum and a preparatory department.
PUEC Goal
The ultimate goal of setting up the Centre of Pre-University Education is to provide appropriate training for secondary school pupils interested in exact sciences and inclined to technical creative work in close co-operation with secondary schools so that they could be well prepared for entering universities or colleges.
PUEC Tasks
- To develop further education systems
- To raise educational and cultural levels of senior school pupils
- To eliminate the gap between academic standards in universities and secondary schools
- To attract and involve scientists, professors and researchers of NSTU in teaching secondary school pupils
- To coordinate work of the faculties with potential students
- To arrange and hold conferences, seminars and contests
- To create textbooks and teaching manuals for senior school pupils and applicants
- To design, introduce and apply advanced methods of teaching, distance education facilities included
Teaching Process and Control
The following units are engaged in the training process:
- Departments of general engineering and humanities and methodological centres
- Laboratories of pre-university education
- Instructional laboratories (computer classrooms, language laboratory)
Great attention is paid to preparing learners for entering and study in a university or college, to their adaptation and early specialization within a new educational model. Training comprises lectures, seminars, tutorials and practical work in laboratory as well as such forms of assessment and control as colloquia, study projects, tests and examinations at the end of the term.
A comprehensive development of learners, their interest in new technological achievements, first of all computers, make it necessary to elaborate new up-to-date technologies of teaching and control such as:
- Testing
- Computerization of the process of training (application of computer programs in mathematics, physics, engineering drawing, etc.)
- Modular-rating system of knowledge assessment
Prospects for PUEC Learners
Completing the course offered by the Pre-University Education Centre, which provides a profound training in exact and natural sciences, allows learners not only to pass school-leaving examinations with perfect results (quality rating in physics and mathematics is 90% and more) but also continue their training at university successfully. Experience gained over four years has shown that only 7.4% of former learners of the PUEC have dropped out from NSTU.
