FACULTY OF MECHANICS AND TECHNOLOGY

Machine building is the key branch of industrial development. Technological progress, rate of growth of national economy and well-being of the people depend on the level of machine-building development.

The Faculty of Machine Building was established at Novosibirsk Institute of Electrical Engineering in 1956 due to the great demand for mechanical engineers in the Siberian region. In 1959 the Aircraft Construction Faculty was set up on its basis and in 1979 the Instrument-Making Faculty branched off. Up to 1964 the Faculty trained engineers in the field of manufacturing engineering and metal-cutting machine tools. In 1965 a new degree in electrophysical machining methods was opened.

In 1998 the Faculty was renamed due to opening new degrees and introducing multilevel system of training. It is now known as the Faculty of Mechanics and Technology. At present the faculty incorporates eight departments. These are the Departments of Manufacturing Engineering; Technological Machines Design; Automatic Production in Machine Building; Materials Science in Machine Building; Manufacturing Methods and Apparatuses; Engineering Drawing; Applied Mechanics; Theoretical Mechanics and Strength of Materials.

The Faculty has instructional and research laboratories specializing in laser, ultrasonic treatment, and spark erosion electrochemical machining. Besides, there are 26 instructional laboratories and 6 computer classrooms. The academic staff are 94 teachers, among them 18 D.Sc. and professors and 58 Cand.Sc. and associate professors.

The Faculty awards Bachelor's and Master's degrees in the fields of automatic machine-building production; materials science and new materials technology and Engineer's degree in the fields of manufacturing engineering; metal cutting machine tools and tooling; automation of manufacturing processes and production; materials science in machine building; machines and apparatuses for food industry; technology of decorative material working. Besides some departments provide training in additional areas thus extending the major field.

Also, the Faculty provides training of doctoral (Cand.Sc.) and postdoctoral students. At the Faculty, there is a specialized D.Sc. Council in the area processes of mechanical and physical and technical treatment, machine tools and tooling.

Students receive fundamental training in basic subjects and professional training in a wide range of major disciplines, computer technology, economics, management, and industrial engineering. The syllabus also provides some elective courses.

The faculty graduates work as designers, process engineers, foremen, adjusters, research engineers at large-scale and small-scale enterprises, design offices, branch research institutes of Siberian Branch of Russian Academy of Sciences. Many of them have been promoted to the position of directors and chief engineers of plants and design institutes, and lead specialists of design offices and technological departments. Among the graduates are Doctors and Candidates of Science.

Broad education in mechanical engineering, economics, computer-aided design allow the graduates not only to specialize in the chosen area of professional activity, but also to get adapted to the conditions of work at commercial enterprises, which is of great significance in the conditions of market economy.

Here are some further details of the directions of training and major fields:

    Engineers who choose Manufacturing Engineering as their major can work at enterprises equipped with up-to-date automatic and automated production equipment, numerically controlled machine-tools and robots as well as in computer centres where the production methods and manufacturing equipment are simulated.
  • Electrophysical and Electrochemical Methods of Treatment
    Engineers specialising in this fields work at enterprises equipped with ultra-sonic, laser, electrochemical electro-erosion manufacturing equipment and in companies' dealing centres distributing electrophysical equipment.

230100 - Operation and Maintenance of Transportation and Production Machines and Equipment (in car service and service provided by companies).

The graduates have an opportunity to work at car service shops, motor transport enterprises and car repair shops; in firms and dealing centres of automobile plants and car repair shops; marketing divisions, customs and certification services; in wholesale and retail companies, trading in transportation facilities, spare parts, component items and operational materials.

170500 - Machines and apparatus for chemical engineering and building materials plants.

Chemical engineering is one of the most dynamic and attractive object for investment and business activities world-wide. For specialists, these are unlimited opportunities to realise their potential in science, technology and strategic branches' control. It is a science-intensive industry, and the assurance of the graduates' competitive abilities on the job market is close co-operation of the Technological Processes' and Apparatuses' Department with world-famous research institutes of the Siberian Branch of Russian Academy of Science in training high-skilled specialists.

The following fields of specialization are offered:

  • Computer Simulation and Design;
  • Chemical Technology Processes and Apparatuses;
  • New Non-Standard Equipment;
  • Chemical Technology and Chemical Technological Systems;
  • Computerization and Control of Technological Equipment;
  • Marketing and Management.

Engineers in the field will be able to successfully work in the priority investment areas: extraction and processing of natural resources, fuel and energy complex; bio- and chemical technology; environmental protection; pharmacology, food industry, building industry; business and management.

120200 - Metal-Cutting Machine-Tools and Tooling.

This technological equipment is available at any enterprise from industrial giants to small workshops. The main field of activity for the engineer is development and maintenance of up-to-date machine-tools, robot complexes, automatic production lines, machining equipment and tooling.

170600 - Food Industry Machines and Apparatuses.

It is a dynamically developing branch in Russia. The major field of activity is design and maintenance of technological complexes and automatic production lines intended for processing raw materials, production, packaging and storage of foodstuff.

Within the framework of the 120200 and 170600 major fields, students are offered the following areas of specialization:

  • Computer Aided Design of Machines
    One of the most promising directions of designer's activities where the wide opportunities of computers for solving design problems are used which allows to create new high-quality design of machines satisfying the market demands in short time.
  • Industrial Design and Advertisement
    This major assumes creative activity with the application of computer graphic facilities in developing industrial art, solution of human engineering issues and strategy of advertising campaign in the conditions of market competition.

210200 - Automation of Manufacturing Processes and Production

The objects of professional activity: design and maintenance of computer integrated manufacturing (CIM). Training is based on the newest information technologies, personal computers, graphic work stations, numerically controlled microprocessor facilities, flexible production modules, industrial robots, coordination measuring machines, programmed controllers, mechanotronic and other automatic functional devices and systems. Within the frameworks of the field, the following areas of specialization are offered:
