Introduction
Novosibirsk State Technical University was the first technological university in Siberia that opened
the faculty of humanities in an attempt to meet society's demands in specialists in the fields that are
not typical of engineering education although closely related to it.
The Faculty offers diverse opportunities in humanities and social sciences and is gaining recognition
for strength and excellence of its programmes. The curricula are designed to expose students to a full
range of human experiences through a consideration of cultural peculiarities, patterns of social and
political behaviour, and methods of critical enquiry. A student may acquire knowledge of a person's
individual nature and the nature of human society as a whole. Students at the Faculty develop their
abilities to reason and communicate at a level appropriate for a world that has grown increasingly
complex and challenging. The Faculty is committed to attracting and retaining creative and gifted
students and prepares them for productive roles in society. Students in their turn are expected to
uphold the highest norms of academic integrity and respect for the diversity of the University community.
Courses are taught by an outstanding team of highly skilled professional educators. Their experience and
professionalism ensure that the curricula are kept abreast with the times and social needs. The academic
and research staff are dedicated to high standards of teaching, proud of their achievements in scholarly
research, and committed to enhance in every possible way the intellectually stimulating environment and
atmosphere existing at the Faculty. The programmes are structured to make possible close personal contacts
between students and teachers and thus to meet the needs of individual students. Prospects for career
planning and job placement on the competitive job market are promising. Graduates of the Faculty may
work in every imaginable arena ¾ business structures, education, governmental organizations, service and
social institutions, and industry.
The Faculty provides a wide range of services for staff and students. Academic facilities include computer
laboratories equipped with modern personal computers for use in specific course work, research, and related
tasks. Students can obtain access from microprocessors to the Internet and to the University network that
links computers throughout the University. Facilities also include laser printers and various software
applications. Language laboratories are provided with a full complement of audio and video equipment and
teaching materials. The University library offers a wide range of state-of-the-art services and provides
generous resources for learning and research. It contains approximately 1.5 million items - textbooks,
monographs, periodicals and publications - which are accessible through a computerized catalogue system.
Structure of course
Instruction comprises formal lectures, seminars and workshops, tutorials, independent study, projects
and an individual research project culminating in a thesis.
Matters of current public concern and the individual interests and expertise of the student determine the content of the project.
Emphasis is laid on the fostering of a developed critical sense and students are regarded as active participants in
the educational process.
The Faculty offers full-time (5 years of study) and part-time (5,5 years of study) programmes. Another
opportunity is an accelerated 4-year part-time programme to students having associate degrees earned at
vocational and technical secondary schools and an accelerated 3 year part-time programme to candidates
holding the Bachelor's and Master's degrees or the Diploma in Engineering and wishing to earn a second
degree.
Training is offered on a contract basis and may be sponsored by students themselves, their parents
or other private individuals and organizations. The University offers academic grants for one semester
to 3 students of each option. Recipients are chosen on the basis of strong academic records of achievement.
The words that best describe the programmes of the Faculty are diversity, individuality and flexibility.
For a student with a broad spectrum of interests, for one with curiosity, initiative, and clearly stated
goals the Faculty offers extraordinary options:
- International relations.
- Social work.
- Tourism management and socio-cultural services.
