Georgi Pavlovich Lyshchinsky (1922 - 1995), is Professor, Academician of International Academy of Acmealogical Science, Honorary Doctor of Silesian Polytechnical Institute (Poland), Honorable Citizen of Novosibirsk. He was rector of Novosibirsk Institute of Electrical Engineering for 35 years, it is mostly due to his activity that the University has become the institution as we see it today.

The name of Georgi Lyshchinsky is closely connected with the history of NIEE. In 1955 he was among the first team of young researchers who came to Novosibirsk from all over the country to work at the newly-founded Institute of Electrical Engineering. By this time, Georgi Lyshchinsky had graduated from Moscow Power Engineering Institute and had been a staff member of Lvov Polytechnical Institute. Upon his arrival, he was appointed deputy director of the Institute. In May 1955 Dr. Lyshchinsky became the first rector of NIEE and held office until 1990. Under his supervision, construction of the Institution was carried out: new teaching blocks and students hostels were built; health, cultural, and sports centres were set up.

In the same years, teaching and research staff was being formed; the Institute's traditions were set up. Remembering about the early days of the Institute, Professor Lyshchinsky wrote, "In our Institute, the process of forming teaching and research staff was going on somewhat faster due to active assistance of large leading higher educational institutions of the country. With profound gratitude, we name Moscow Power Engineering Institute, Tomsk Polytechnical Institute, Leningrad Institute of Electrical Engineering, and Tomsk State University. We adopted the best traditions of these institutions."

Under the supervision of Prof. Lyshchinsky, collaboration of NIEE with leading national and foreign researchers was started. At that time, agreements on cooperations were concluded with Silesian Polytechnical Institute (Poland), Chemnitz Technical University (Germany), Harbin Institute of Technology (China); fruitful cooperation with the Institutes of the Siberian Branch of USSR Academy of Science was initiated. On the basis of Institute of Nuclear Physics and Institute of Semiconductor Physics of the Siberian Branch of USSR Academy of Sciences, Physical Engineering Faculty was organized at NIEE.

With the name Prof. Lyshchinsky is connected the development of new directions in the organization of training: for the first time in the country, Faculty of Humanities and Department of Pedagogics and Psychology were established at a higher education engineering institution.

Attention of the rector was directed not only at the development of science and educational process, but also at the organization of social and cultural life of NIEE. Owing to Prof. Lyshchinsky, the University has its Academic Choir, Variety Orchestra, Violinists' Ensemble. The traditional Days of Poetry were also initiated by Prof. Lyshchinsky.

Six teaching blocks, seven students' hostels, three apartment houses for the staff, sport camps Sharap and Erlogol; 10000 students, 1200 teaching staff members including 50 D.Sc. and about 600 Cand.Sc. are the results of Prof. Lyshchinsky's 35-year work as rector of NIEE. However, speaking about Prof. Georgi Lyshchinsky's contribution, we should also mention his research work. Colleagues and students knew him not only as a talented leader and organizer, but also as an outstanding scientist.

For many years, Prof. Georgi Lyshchinsky was head of Department of Electric Drive and Automation of Industrial Installations. His lectures attracted many students who were involved in discussion of this or that problem. Almost all the current staff of the Department are his disciples. Much effort was directed at research developments. Prof. Lyshchinsky supervised all important research subjects in the Department. 30 researchers defended their Candidate's dissertations under his guidance.

In honour of Prof. Georgi Lyshchinsky's contribution, a memorial board was put up at the entrance of the University's major building. In NSTU museum, a large part of constant exposition is dedicated to Prof. Lyshchinsky's life and work.
